What’s the deal about SOY?
A lot of people are concerned about soy because of the phytoestrogens they contain. It’s no wonder – soy has been found to have both an anti-estrogenic effect in some cases, and a pro-estrogenic effects in others. Trying to completely understand the science and chemistry behind it makes my own head hurt.
Soy can dramatically improve menopausal symptoms, as well as reduce the risk for certain cancers.
However, soy is a great source of plant-based protein and can be a viable alternative to animal products for those who want to maintain a plant-based lifestyle.
Let’s get some facts straight.
There is a difference in soy. Fermented (miso, tempeh) and unfermented (tofu, soy milk). Researchers have found that unfermented soy can help protect against prostate cancer.
Bottom line, unless you have a soy allergy, chances are consuming soy products will be GOOD for you. When you are choosing your soy-based foods, make sure you are choosing a non-GMO or organic product. By law, organic products have to be GMO.
